Five Essentials for Every Wedding Photographer

If you’re just learning how to run a photography business, there is so much more to being an entrepreneur and business owner than taking a great photo. For me there are five essentials you really need to have in place before dealing with paid or unpaid clients.

These have saved me a ton of headaches over the years and I’m betting they will save you some too!

Here are my five must-haves for every professional photographer:

  1. Contracts

Contracts are my number one because they not only protect you, they protect your client by clearly defining the work you’ll be doing together. Whether it’s an unpaid or paid shoot, having a contract will always be in your favor.

  2. Liability Insurance

You should always have liability insurance in case something goes wrong during your shoot. Some venues even require photographers to prove they are covered. This protects you, your gear, and your assets.

  3. Working Website & Contact Form

A website is a must, but a mobile-friendly website is essential. You’ll also need a way for potential clients to contact you, but make sure it’s the way you want to communicate. If you don’t like email, offer texting instead. Use a format that works for you and you’ll not only enjoy communicating with your clients, they’ll enjoy communicating with you!

  4. Backup Gear

My gear has been through it all, including breaking during a wedding. Luckily, I had a backup camera on hand. This goes for batteries, memory cards, basically any and all of your essential gear needed to get the job done.

  5. 3x Backup Storage

Yes, really. Backup your client images in three separate places! I store mine in the studio, at home, and in the cloud. Offsite storage is important in the case of fire or weather damage.
